I'm more concerned it may repeat at any moment, without any warning. I don't remember anything that could have hinted it was coming....and nothing says it happens only at nighttime, too.

It's hard to know how to deal with this when you don't even know what it was.
I would suggest a "buddy system" of sorts, to ensure that no one is caught alone and left unaccounted for should the unthinkable happen... but I doubt that this group would be amenable to that.

Maybe. I get the impression that a number of people here aren't fond of cops, in general. Or any perceived "authority" figures... insubstantial as said authority may be.
