[Somewhere in town, Kim's daemon picks up a glass shard in her talons, as she moves about in the form of a great skua. He doesn't realize there's someone else nearby, but in an instant, both he and Nanaly experience a violent shoot-out as if they were there, looking through Kim's eyes.]
[ Damn... She's been in hundreds of life-or-death fights with monsters and a few with other humans, but her heart's still pounding after that. She rarely runs into that many enemies all at once, and if she does -- at least lately -- she's in a party of four instead of just two. ]
...I hope that's not a typical day on the job for you.
[Kim's wincing a little, himself. But he quickly regains his composure.]
Thankfully, no. You won't find weapons like those in the hands of common street punks, or even career criminals. And most confrontations can be de-escalated, but that one... [He shakes his head.] There was no chance.
Oh, the world has governments. Revachol does not. And the Citizens Militia that I work with isn't the only "peacekeeping" force to form in that absence. Many companies hire mercenaries to protect their financial interests... and these were three such mercenaries, hired by one such company.
They were sent to town to break a dockworkers' strike. One of their people was murdered, which they assumed was the work of the labourers they were antagonizing. They intended to massacre the dockworkers in revenge.
[ Well, to the government part, anyway; and rich people hiring mercenaries makes sense. The dockworkers' strike part just goes over her head, though. ]
In the end, we were able to prevent a complete massacre... but six people still died that night. And the conflict between the company and the workers is likely to continue.

[ Exhales. ]
Who were they, anyway, if they weren't normal criminals? Your world didn't have a government, right?
[ She'd associate that kind of armor and everything with soldiers normally, but if it's just you guys with your militia and no government forces... ]

[ Jeez. She couldn't really keep track of where all the bullets ended up well enough to count. ]
Then your partner there...?

[Something in his expression lightens. It's almost a smile.]

[ Someone must have had a life bottle on them!! ]
With how bad that was looking, I was kind of expecting the worst.

That was a rough day.

[Just like, deadeyes at their surroundings.]

[ Her daemon, on the other hand, has pretty okay timing, and chooses this moment to paw at a shard in a crack in the ground.
This probably sounds a little familiar if he filed away their first conversation here. ]

That's what you mentioned before... the changed history.
